How to Choose the Right Exterior Sign for Your Business

Before you pick a font or a color, figure out what the sign actually needs to do. A sign for a strip-center restaurant that depends on drive-by traffic has different priorities than a sign for a professional office that mostly needs to help people find the front door.

Start with what the sign needs to do

Ask a few questions first: is the goal to be seen from the road at 40 mph, or to look good up close at the entrance? Is this the only signage for the business, or one part of a larger identity? Answering these narrows the field before you look at a single design.

Check your local sign code first

Houston and the surrounding cities each have their own rules on sign height, square footage, illumination and setback from the property line, and many centers add their own restrictions on top of that. It's worth checking — or having your sign company check — before you settle on a design, since a sign that doesn't meet code can mean a redesign, a variance request or a rejected permit.

Match the sign type to the property

Channel letters mounted on the building work well when the storefront itself is visible from the road. A monument sign at ground level suits a retail center set back from the street. A pylon sign, raised above the roofline, is usually the right call on a wider or faster road where a ground-level sign would get lost. Most properties end up needing more than one type working together.

Plan for after dark

A sign that looks great at noon can disappear at night if lighting wasn't part of the plan. Halo-lit or channel-lettered signs stay legible after sunset without adding a separate floodlight, which matters if your business gets evening traffic.

We handle the design, permitting, fabrication and installation in-house, so if you're not sure which type fits your property, that's a conversation we can have before you commit to anything.
